Deep Dive

Pope St. Gregory I, known as Gregory the Great, guided the Church during a time of immense political instability following the collapse of the Western Roman Empire. A former monk, he brought monastic discipline to the papacy. He is renowned for dispatching St. Augustine of Canterbury to evangelize the Anglo-Saxons in England. He also instituted widespread liturgical reforms (Gregorian chant is named in his honor) and wrote extensively on pastoral care and theology. His reign solidified the spiritual and temporal authority of the Papacy in Western Europe.
