What is it?
This sacrament gives strength, peace, and courage to those seriously ill or in danger of death. It is not just for the dying — it is for any Catholic who is seriously ill, facing surgery, or weakened by age or illness.
Theological Meaning
Christ Himself showed special care for the sick during His ministry. Through this sacrament, the Church continues His healing mission. The anointing unites the sick person's sufferings with Christ's Passion, for the good of themselves and the whole Church.
How it's Celebrated
The priest or bishop visits the sick person
Brief liturgy of the Word is read
The priest lays hands on the sick person in silence
The oil of the sick (blessed by bishop) is anointed on the forehead and hands
Prayer: 'Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit'
Communion may be given (Viaticum if near death)
