Biography
Born Fernando Martins in Lisbon, Portugal, he initially joined the Augustinian Canons before transferring to the Franciscan Order, hoping to be martyred in Morocco. Illness forced his return to Europe, where a storm blew his ship to Italy. There, he met St. Francis of Assisi. Anthony's extraordinary gift for preaching was discovered by accident when he was asked to give an unprepared homily. He became known as the 'Hammer of Heretics' for his eloquent defense of the Catholic faith against the Cathar heresy. After his death at age 35, his tongue remained miraculously incorrupt, a testament to his preaching.
