Biography
Born in Nursia, Italy, Benedict was sent to Rome to study but, repulsed by the city's vice, he fled to live as a hermit in a cave at Subiaco. His reputation for holiness attracted followers, though his strict discipline also caused some rebellious monks to attempt to poison him (the glass shattered when he blessed it). He eventually founded the great monastery of Monte Cassino, where he wrote the 'Rule of St. Benedict.' This Rule became the foundation of Western monasticism, emphasizing a balance of prayer and work ('Ora et Labora'), obedience, and stability. Through his monks, Benedict profoundly shaped the civilization, agriculture, and education of Christian Europe.
