Biography
Jude, also known as Thaddeus, was one of the original Twelve Apostles of Jesus. He is identified as the brother of James the Less and a relative of Jesus. After the Ascension and Pentecost, Jude preached the Gospel in Judea, Samaria, Idumaea, Syria, Mesopotamia, and Libya. He is credited with authoring the brief Epistle of Jude in the New Testament, which warns against false teachers and encourages the faithful to persevere. According to tradition, he was martyred in Beirut or Persia around 65 AD, often depicted carrying the image of Jesus (the Mandylion) or with a flame above his head representing Pentecost. He became widely known as the patron of lost causes due to the belief that, because his name resembled Judas Iscariot, the faithful rarely prayed to him, leaving his intercessory power available for the most desperate cases.
