Biography

Maximilian was a young Christian living in Numidia (modern-day Algeria) during the Roman Empire. As the son of a Roman army veteran, he was legally obliged to serve in the military. When he was brought before the proconsul Dion to be measured and enrolled, Maximilian famously refused, stating: 'I cannot serve in the military; I am a Christian. I cannot do evil.' Despite the proconsul's threats and arguments that other Christians served in the emperor's guard, Maximilian remained steadfast, valuing his heavenly King above the Roman Emperor. He was executed by beheading at the age of 21, becoming an early martyr for Christian pacifism.
