Biography

Philip Neri went to Rome as a young man and lived a life of poverty, engaging people in the streets with his cheerful humor and warmth. During a profound mystical experience in the catacombs on the eve of Pentecost 1544, a globe of fire entered his mouth and physically enlarged his heart, breaking two of his ribs. Ordained a priest, he became an extraordinary confessor and founded the Congregation of the Oratory, bringing young people together for informal prayer, music, and joyful fellowship. He used humor, eccentric behavior, and practical jokes to combat pride and the worldly pomp of Renaissance Rome. He is considered the second Apostle of Rome after St. Peter.

Miracles & Signs
