Biography

Margherita Lotti was married at an early age to a harsh and abusive man, Paolo Mancini. For 18 years she endured his insults and infidelities with patience and prayer, eventually converting him. Shortly after his conversion, he was murdered in a family feud. Rita's two sons vowed revenge, but Rita prayed they would die rather than commit murder; both boys died of dysentery shortly after. Now a widow and childless, she sought to join the Augustinian nuns, but was refused due to her husband's family feud. Through prayer, she miraculously reconciled the feuding families and was admitted. Later in life, while praying before a crucifix, she received a stigmata on her forehead—a wound from the crown of thorns, which remained open and painful until her death.
