Biography

Stephen was one of the original seven deacons ordained by the Apostles to care for the Greek-speaking widows in the early Jerusalem church, allowing the Apostles to focus on prayer and the ministry of the Word. He was 'a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit' (Acts 6:5). He performed great wonders and signs, and his powerful apologetic preaching enraged the Jewish authorities. Brought before the Sanhedrin, Stephen delivered a masterful summary of salvation history, accusing the leaders of resisting the Holy Spirit. As he looked up to heaven, he saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. He was dragged out of the city and stoned to death. As he died, he prayed for his killers: 'Lord, do not hold this sin against them,' echoing Christ on the cross. Saul of Tarsus (later St. Paul) approved of his execution.
