Biography

Teresa of Cepeda y Ahumada was born in Ávila, Spain, to a family of converso background. Entering the Carmelite Monastery of the Incarnation at age 20, she spent nearly 20 years in spiritual mediocrity before a profound conversion experience at age 39. She then experienced mystical graces including interior locutions, visions, and levitations. Teresa reformed the Carmelite Order, founding the first Discalced Carmelite monastery in Ávila in 1562 and eventually establishing 17 more foundations despite fierce opposition. Her major works — 'The Interior Castle,' 'The Way of Perfection,' and her autobiography — remain spiritual masterpieces. In 1970, Pope Paul VI declared her the first female Doctor of the Church, along with Catherine of Siena.

The feeling remains that God is on the journey, too.
It is love alone that gives worth to all things.
Christ has no body now but yours. No hands, no feet on earth but yours.
