Biography

Thomas More was an English Renaissance humanist, lawyer, and statesman who served as Lord High Chancellor of England under King Henry VIII. A devout Catholic father of four, he was a close friend of Erasmus and author of the famous book 'Utopia.' When Henry VIII sought to annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon and declare himself Supreme Head of the Church of England, breaking away from the Pope, More resigned his chancellorship. He refused to swear the Oath of Supremacy, citing his conscience and the unity of Christendom. He was imprisoned in the Tower of London for over a year, tried for treason on perjured testimony, and beheaded. His final words proclaimed his loyalty to both king and God.
